Safety goggles
Safety goggles are clear plastic glasses that wrap around your eyes.
What is it for?
They protect your eyes from splashes and flying bits during experiments.
How to use it
Put them on before the experiment starts, and keep them on until everything has been cleared away.
🥽 Safety tip: Normal glasses are not enough. Goggles fit over them and close the gaps around the sides.
Fun fact from Fizzy: That is why I always wear mine, even in a pretend lab!
Why eyes need extra care
Your eyes are wet and soft, so a tiny splash of acid, alkali or even hot water can hurt them badly. Goggles seal against your face, so splashes from the side, above or below cannot get in.
Good goggles are made from tough polycarbonate plastic that will not shatter. Some have little vents to stop them misting up, and some are made to fit over normal glasses.
If something does get in your eye
Tell a grown-up straight away and rinse the eye with lots of clean, running water. Labs have special eyewash stations for this. Never rub your eye, because that can make it worse.
